Meherpur Government College, one of the oldest educational institutions in Bangladesh, was established in 1962. As a subject, English began its journey with the establishment of the college. From the very beginning, English was taught as a compulsory subject at Intermediate and Degree (Pass) levels. However, the Department of English was established and the BA (Honors) course has been introduced from the session of 1998 – 1999 under National University, Bangladesh. Besides, the MA (Final Year) course started from the session of 2012-2013. From then onwards, the department has been contributing to creating an enlightened class of people.

At present the department is run by a number of dynamic academics headed by a distinguished professor, two assistant professors and three lecturers who are devoted to disseminate knowledge among the students.

More than 500 students study in BA (Honors), Masters (Final Year) classes in this department. Teachers have also been conducting lessons in HSC and BA (Pass) classes very efficiently in Communicative Approach using modern equipments like multimedia projector. Receiving degrees from this institution, numerous scholarly students have shown their expertise in diverse fields in nation building.
